Autodesk Assists Customers Garner Stimulus Dollars

"Federal stimulus dollars are putting Americans back to work on the nation's highways, but companies behind the scenes are reaping rewards as well.

At Autodesk's Manchester, New Hampshire, office, engineers are hard at work on simulations for shovel ready projects, thanks to the money states now have for infrastructure improvements through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act."

Autodesk Navisworks 2010 - Incorrect Window Element Export

Users of Autodesk Navisworks 2010 may have noticed that window elements do not export correctly from Revit Architecture 2010 and Revit MEP 2010.

It appears that surfaces are exported without openings, windows display opaque and bounding boxes are also making their way across unforeseen. Additionally, three small boxes are created next to the wall - without ever being in the original drawing in the first place.

Root cause to all of this seems to be that non visible, yet present entities, are included.

The issue affects Autodesk Navisworks Manage 2010, Autodesk Navisworks Review 2010, Autodesk Navisworks Simulate 2010 and Autodesk Navisworks Freedom 2010.

The Autodesk Navisworks team has created a HotFix to address this particular problem. Users can download the HotFix here.

Please send us any comments, feedback or suggestions you may have.

Thank you.

Autodesk Design Review 2010 - HotFix

Many users encountered this issue after the initial release of Autodesk Design Review 2010.

The application produced undesirable printing results, when printing to PDF. In most cases this included the default print settings of Autodesk Design Review 2010 and it caused large print spooling sizes, low-quality output and even printing errors.

We have now produced a HotFix for Autodesk Design Review 2010, which addresses these issues.

You can download the HotFix and the accompanying ReadMe here.

Please send us any feedback, comments or suggestions you may have.

Thank you.

Looking for Accountability

"At the Greentech Media and Groom Energy, Enterprise Carbon Accounting Summit in Burlingame, Calif., Emma Stewart, who heads up Autodesk's Sustainable Business & Operations program, lays out the company's five strategies for reducing its environmental impact. It wants to not only build better design tools for itself and customers, but also to become more and more sustainable from within the company by examining everything from square foot usage to future partnership possibilities."

List Revit's Model ID in Navisworks Clash Detective Report?

My recent post "What is Clash Detection" triggered some customer feedback, one of which I consider worthy covering in this article.

Here is the question submitted by the reader: "Is there any way to get the various reports to list a Revit's model's Element ID of a clashing object?"

Very happy to share that we can answer the question with "Yes it is possible".

Users need to set up "Smart tags" to  show the element ID.  "Smart tags display property information in a tooltip style window as you move your cursor over objects in the Scene Area. By default, smart tags show the name and type of the object, but you can use the Options Editor to define which properties are shown. Each definition that you configure enables you to display an additional category/property combination in smart tags. You can choose whether to hide category names in smart tags or not."

Then export the report as normal and the Element ID should appear in the report.

Navisworks File Open Error

Users may experience difficulties when attempting to open Navisworks 2010 files in earlier versions of the product.

At this point, users will be presented with a message when a model from a future version is loaded into a previous version. The message could match the one shown here or may be similar.

NWfileopenerror

We recommend the following workaround to our customers:

You should load the model in the version it came from or ask the sender of the file to go to "File > Save As" and save the file as an earlier version of the file.

Note: The problem mainly occurs with NWD files but can occur with NWF and NWC files.

Please share any feedback or comments you may have.

Thank you.

Beginning of the End for Vista? - Off Topic

One can find many references out in the “blog world”, that indicate the rise of Windows 7.

Should that mean for Vista to exit the market earlier than anticipated?

Windows 7 is looking better and better as it gets closer to release. Many analysts state the obvious and tell businesses to move away from Vista and to directly go to Windows 7.

Remember Windows Me, which came on-line about a decade ago? Windows Vista appears to have similarities and turned out a “not so great” product, too. It was filled with problems and launched before it was ready. By the time Microsoft smoothed out most of the problems, Vista had already gotten a lasting reputation for being frustrating at times as well as slow.

A few businesses may want the option of buying Vista if they've invested in conversion and training, but most are still on XP for the majority of their users. Stopping the distribution of Vista just makes sense if Windows 7 really turns out to be as great a success as it seems to be heading for.

Said that, despite all the improvements made in Windows 7, it still requires additional expenditures for things like mal-ware protection.

Let’s see where this journey takes us.

I think that I will go straight for Windows 7, being still a strong proponent of XP – how about you?

Thank you.
